The đàn môi (or dan moi) is a traditional Vietnamese jaw harp, typically used by the Hmong people of Vietnam. It’s a small, portable instrument made from metal or bamboo that produces a distinctive, resonant, and often hypnotic sound. Unlike other types of jaw harps, which are held against the teeth, the dan moi is played by holding it lightly against the lips. The player then plucks the instrument’s reed with a finger, causing it to vibrate and produce sound. The dan moi is an important part of Hmong musical culture, often played for relaxation or as part of social gatherings. It’s known for its simplicity but also for its expressive capability, allowing skilled players to evoke emotions and moods.
